Richard E.A. Ditzler, 40, of Middletown, swerved to avoid a deer that ran in front of his 2009 Ford Escape on Manada Bottom Road in East Hanover Township at about 3:11 p.m. on Sunday, Apr. 3, state police say.

Ditzler drove off the roadway into a ditch, hit a tree, and flipped over onto the Ford’s roof, according to the release.

Ditzler— who was unrestrained, sustained moderate injuries, but his passenger, Mahogany Marie Peters, 35, of Trevorton— who was seatbelted— suffered life-threatening injuries, state police explained in the release.

Both were taken to Hershey Medical Center for treatment, the release shows.

Peters died from her injuries on Wednesday, Apr. 13, according to the release.

Peters turned 35, while she was in the hospital, according to her mom.

The family launched a GoFundMe the following day to begin to raise money to cover her funeral expenses.

Her family explains that the accident caused severe brain damage and “the doctors are saying they did everything they can and at this point, we need to figure out arrangements for Mahogany.”

The GoFundMe has raised $3,753 of a $10,000 goal as of Thursday.

Mahogany originally from Scranton, according to her social media.

She is survived by her children Mercedes Moore, 17, Alexis Moore, 14, Michael Baker 13, and Trenton Baker, 11, her mother Cynthia Riddick, her sister Tess, and a large extended family, according to the GoFundMe and social media posts by the family.
